Even tho im a chinese, i feel that i should say that we dont have the earliest history. that honor goes 2 the egyptians, who's history begins with egypt as a unified state, which occurred sometime around 3000BC.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. There's a novel written by a Mat Salleh on this matter exactly. It's called 'Chung Kuo' in which this alternative history is explored. The Chinese continued to be the leaders of the world in a futuristic setting. However, the emperor and dynasty system is still in place there. But of course, being written by a Mat Salleh, there's a rebellion by the white dudes against the government :) Check it out and see! :P

xhiin: Shuudup lah banana no. 2! :P

anthraxxxx: Yeah, I guess every Chinese and historian have contempelated that thought before :)

I would guess that if that happened, China would eventually made contact with Western Europe (which was still quite pitiful then) and will influence their direction in history. For example, Europeans may start wearing Chinese robes, and implement similar government systems?

But on the long run, it would be China, and not the USA who would become the world leader. Chinese pop culture would dominate the world, bringing Chinese culture to most countries. Mandarin would be the international language. Racism would be reversed: Chinese would look down upon Westerners/Africans/Middle-Easterns/etc.

But apart from that fatal close-door foreign policy, we must also remember that China didn't embark on its own Industrial Revolution during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Why? I'm guessing we didn't concentrate enough on the sciences then. Too much philosophies and poetries.

Plus the last element which I think contributed to the Chinese decline was Confucianism. Its discouragement on commerce and trading realy screwed us up. Plus its love for tradition and conservatism also help us back from discovering new lands as well as making new scientific discoveries. Just look at how little has changed between the Qin dynasty and the Ming dynasty. We even dressed in nearly the same style!

It's very interesting that chinese civilization has spanned more than 4000 years. Sometimes I can't help it but wonder what will ever happen if the Ming dynasty never closes their door on foreign policy.
